Brits are among the most active and competent internet users in Europe
More Brits are active internet users than the EU average, according to an annual assessment by the European Commission.
The EC's Digital Economy and Society Index (DESI) says that 90% of Brits are active internet users – well above the EU average of 76%.
The assessment tracks indicators such as internet use and high-speed broadband. It also looks at the number of Science, Technology and Mathematics (STEM) graduates to give an idea how prepared each EU member state is for the digital age. The UK ranks sixth in the index overall.
